This Man Is Currently Paddling His Kayak On A Journey of Almost 1300 Miles - Is He Crazy?
Final Update: The Journey is Complete!June 25th, 2007 - 6:00 PM - Chris completed his epic journey this evening as he paddled through the Hudson River and berthed his kayak for the final time in New York City. Read more about it in Chris' Daily Diary.
The Chinese philosopher Confucius said, "A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step." Somewhere along the way in his life, Chris Simons might have been influenced by this ancient wisdom, but his personal journey of almost thirteen hundred miles differs a bit. It began with the stroke of a paddle instead of a footstep. At age 36, Chris celebrated his birthday by boarding his small, one man kayak and embarking on his own "journey of a lifetime".
On his 36th birthday, April 28th, 2007, Chris set out from his home in Miami, Florida and headed north, via the Intracoastal Waterway, towards the bright lights of New York City, almost 1300 miles away. This epic journey has a simple purpose - to raise the environmental awareness of people he meets along his way. He does not have some elaborate plan, no self-aggrandizing dreams of fame and fortune, just a simple objective - paddle from Miami to New York.
He hopes to raise some money via this website as he paddles between 20 and 50 miles per day. He does not plan to keep the money, but rather to donate it to a special group, the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), of which he has been a member for several years. The NRDC is an organization dedicated to its mission of serving as “the Earth’s best line of defense” in order to protect and preserve the natural beauty of world around us. Chris feels that this group best represents his own ideals as far as the environment is concerned.
We'll be using this website to raise the level awareness about Chris' efforts and to keep the rapidly legion of his supporters informed about his progress. If you'd like to be part of Chris' journey, click here to see how you can help.
